Job Description
A postdoctoral scholar (PhD 5 years) is available in the Macroevolution Unit at OIST, an English-language research institute located near the ocean in subtropical Okinawa, Japan. We seek a highly motivated, expert researcher with a deep interest in fish biodiversity, including but not limited to systematics, morphology, taxonomy, ecology, biogeography, and the fossil record. The researcher will pursue groundbreaking projects on ichthyological topics, such as the origins of the Indo-Pacific biodiversity hotspot, the origins and diversification of fish groups, description and characterization of species and communities, and/or the influence of environmental and ecological factors on fish biodiversity. Exact projects will be developed by the selected researcher through discussions with PI Lauren Sallan based on skills, interests, and ideas.
The researcher will have access to internal, Unit-based funding for research needs, training opportunities, conference travel, museum travel and/or fieldwork. They will also have access to a new lab space and excellent equipment and core facilities, including a fully staffed Marine Station with diving support, a staffed sequencing center, a fish husbandry facility (for non-model fishes), a high powered computing cluster, a flow tank with DPIV system, an imaging center with microCT, 3D scanners, and a growing collection of Okinawan fishes.
The selected researcher will also receive in-Unit administrative support for research purchases and travel. OIST Benefits include housing support, childcare assistance, health insurance, paid annual, summer and other leave, relocation and visa assistance, free English and Japanese language classes, and ongoing support for life in Japan through the OIST Resource Center. OIST is located in a low cost of living area with a high quality of life, and abundant natural settings.
The start date is negotiable. Promising senior graduate students and current postdocs looking for positions in 2025 are encouraged to apply.
