Abstract:"The principle and application of a new sample preparation method--solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) are introduced in this paper. An SPME unit consists of a certain length of fused silica fiber coated with stationary phase, and a holder which looks like a microliter syringe. Organic analytes are adsorbed by the fiber, and is directly introduced into the GC injector, where the adsorbed analytes are desorbed. SPME can be used to concentrate volatile and nonvolatile compounds in both liquid and gaseous samples without the use of solvents and provides low detection limits. The technique is more favorable in comparing with other sample preparation methods"
