Abstract:"Rats tested in the forced swim test were more immobile in fresh water than in water soiled by other rats, which presumably contained an alarm substance. Adrenalectomy did not affect the behavior of the rats in fresh or soiled water, nor did it affect production of or response to the putative alarm substance. The results of this study indicate that the adrenals do not mediate the response to, or production of the alarm substance"
